Our Experience

Since the 1970s, Zygo has been the largest manufacturer of meter-class optics and expanded into the 1980s to Lawrence Livermore (LLNL) National Ignition Facility (NIF), including mirrors for use in beam direction and transmissive optics such as windows, lenses, beam splitters, and polarizer optics. Our heritage spans decades of programs such as LLNL NIF, Airborne Laser, HELIOS, LaWS and many more.

We consistently and repeatedly deliver high-energy laser components and systems under extremely tight manufacturing tolerances. Our proprietary processes enable us to provide highly reliable laser optics meeting stringent surface roughness and wavefront requirements.

We have extensive experience in manufacturing hundreds of windows that vary in size up to 600mm. These windows are able to withstands high energy thresholds make Zygo the top partner for high energy laser applications. 

Manufacturing Readiness

Zygo is a vertically integrated company with multiple manufacturing facilities located across the United States. Our master opticians, technicians and designers use a combination of proprietary and industry-standard techniques to bring your most complex concepts to life.

Our optics group is ITAR Registered and provides advanced engineering, prototyping, volume manufacturing, and high-precision optical component fabrication and assembly services in the USA making it easy to work with us on defense programs.

We are a strategic partner with in-house design and analysis capability that works with our customers to ensure all designs are optimized for system-level performance.

We have three manufacturing facilities located in the United States used to produce optics above industry average optical windows, mirrors, and more. In total, our manufacturing facilities offer 276,000 square foot in space. At the height of the Lawrence Livermore NIF program, Zygo produced 80-meter sized laser fusion optics per month. Our polishing facilities also remain unmatched as we have the highest polishing capacity in the industry for large optics up to 1 meter.

Deformable Mirrors

Deformable mirrors use an array of actuators to bend their surface to compensate for wavefront errors. Zygo has the capability to fabricate meter-class optics, including half-meter diagonal deformable mirrors, with extremely high precision surfaces.

Our Capabilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Successfully manufactured deformable mirrors of 0.5m (500mm) in size RMS Wavefront Distortion of single-digit nanometers
  • Sub-nanometer surface roughness over 0.1mm to 1mm spatial band

Off-Axis Parabolic Mirrors

For our team, anything is possible. Especially when it comes to manufacturing and measuring the most challenging aspheric optical elements and sub-systems made from the toughest materials, including Silicon Carbide Off-Axis Parabolas.

Our Extreme Precision Optics group (formerly Tinsley laboratories) has been developing and perfecting advanced optical fabrication and measurement technologies for over 50 years, that are capable of achieving ultra-low surface figure, roughness and sub-surface damage.

Coating Capability

Zygo has the advantage of producing specialty optical coatings all under one roof for challenging environments. We also have several large e-beam chambers, some with ion-assist, to coat these.

  • 2× 72” chambers, in addition to multiple 48” chambers
  • Wavelengths from DUV (248nm) to MWIR (3-5µm)
  • AR Coatings: Laser damage 769KW/cm2 CW at 1064nm normal incidence
  • HR Coatings: 35MW/cm2 with no discoloration, 167MW/cm2 with no catastrophic damage

Testing

In addition to engineering your design, we also offer leading, custom, metrology solutions to verify your systems. Zygo laser interferometers, which are offered in a variety of wavelengths, support the measurement of “defense application” to certify all specifications after coating.

Our metrology solutions are also recognized as one of the top solutions in the industry for measuring some of the most challenging asphere shapes including off-axis parabolas.
